The search for gold in lead was the alchemists' code for the real search for the spiritual in the material. The symbol of the alchemical rose expresses this belief in the immanence of the divine. It also speaks to the concurrent, if hidden, "left hand path" in Western thought: the Eastern mysticism that never succumbed to the dominant religions.
